Kids Fishing Gear, Tips and Advice

Kids fishing gear has many requirements which derive from safety precautions, ease of use, durability, etc. Let's look into some of the most popular fishing gear for kids.

1. There are cheap rods and reels available but they may not be the best choice for kids gear. Instead of disappointing the youngsters, get them a nice light weight rod and reel. Rods vary from about 4 to 6 feet long. Buy a 5 or 6 feet rod, anything shorter is not going to work well for casting.

2. Choose a good quality 2-4 pound test line. Get your kids some torpedo style floats - they are best for beginner in fishing.

3. Kids fishing gear must include lures & bobbers. Lures are cast into the water and then reeled in while a bobber is used with dangling hooks. Get some flies for dry fly fishing, spiders do very well. You can also purchase a tackle box - with or without supplies.

4. We recommend purchasing barbless fishing flies. If you already purchase barbed ones, mash down the barb with a vice grip. This makes releasing the fish very easy and is a great safety precaution!

5. Part of kids fishing gear should be a pair of needle nose wire snips. They come in handy when you need to clip the line when the fish swallows the fly.
